The Six Most Anticipated Movies of 2023 with Italian Influence

This week, Vanity Fair came out with its annual rankings of the most anticipated movies of 2023. The list includes 26 films that are expected to set the tone for Hollywood in the coming year. 

Our staff at America Domani analyzed the list and these are the 6 films that have an Italian connection.

Creed III:

On May 23, the latest chapter of the massively popular Creed trilogy will be released nationwide. Michael B. Jordan shows his versatility as both an actor and director in the movie, Creed III will give Rocky fans a reason to get excited. The Creed series was born out of the Rocky franchise, created by Italian American icon Sylvester Stallone.  

Killers of the Flower Moon:

Scorsese fans will get exactly what they wanted as the legendary director makes his return to mainstream cinema in 2023 with this Western crime drama. Beyond Scorsese, who is 100 percent Italian himself, this film stars other notable Italian Americans including Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Napoleon

Starring Vanessa Kirby and Joaquin Phoenix, this is one of the first mainstream films to tell the story of the French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. While Napoleon is known for his influence on French history, he is actually of Tuscan and Genoese descent.  

Beau is Afraid

Directed by Ari Aster, this upcoming comedy horror film will have moviegoers on the edge of their seats. The cast is rich with Italian American representation, including Patti LuPone and Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late James Gandolfini. 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie:

 Chris Pratt took a major risk signing up to play the starring role in the upcoming computer-animated movie of the classic Mario Bros video game series. Pratt’s Italian accent will be put to the test for moviegoers beginning on April 7 once the movie is released in theaters. 

The Holdovers

This comedy-drama centers around a prep school teacher who is tasked with mentoring a rebellious student. The film stars well-known Italian American Paul Giamatti, who previously appeared in films such as Cinderella Man, Private Life, and American Splendor.
