New York parents were feeling extra “Italiano” in 2022. According to the New York City Health Department, 40 percent of the City’s 10 most popular newborn girl names were influenced by Italian culture.
Here is a look at the four baby girl names with Italian roots that made the Top 10 list.
Mia: simply put, this means “mine” in Italian. Many New Yorkers were claiming this name as “theirs” in 2022, as Mia finished third among the city’s most popular girl names this year. Famous Mia’s include Mia Martini, Mia Hamm, and Mia Farrow.
Sofia: derived from the word “sage”, Sofia has become one of the most popular baby girl names in the world. Famous Italians who bear this name include Sofia Loren, Sofia Coppola, and Sofia Milos.
Luna: the most recent full moon glowed over New York right before Christmas on December 23. Hundreds of “Luna’s”, or “moons” in Italian, brought smiles to new parents in delivery rooms this year. Perhaps the most famous Luna is TikTok star Luna Bloom, who boasts more than 2 million followers on the social media platform.
Isabella: a variation of the Italian name for Elizabeth, or “Elisabetta”, Isabella became one of New York’s most popular baby names in 2022. While there are millions of Isabella’s in the world, none is more famous than the legendary Italian actress Isabella Rossellini.
