Brooklyn-Style Deli Takes a Slice Out of Long Island

Camillo and Maria Galofaro opened Mangiamo Italian Market, an old-school Brooklyn-style deli, in the heart of Centereach on Middle Country Road in Long Island, NY. Their goal is to take customers back to a simpler time, where everybody knows your name and quality is at the heart of the business.

When the Galfaro’s took over Badolato’s Market, they started building something new, something great. “The Badolatos are a very nice family, who built a very beautiful store here,” said Camillo. Now, it’s time for the Galofaro’s to bring that old-school charm to Long Island. Manigamo’s Italian market had their Grand Opening on Monday, February 13th. “For years, we have been looking for a perfect space to open our own store — and we found it,” Camillo said.

Here are some things you need to know about Mangiamo’s Italian Market:

  • They’ll be selling brick oven homemade bread, imported cheeses and dried sausages. You’ll also find ready to-go meals, other imported goods from Italy, as well as fresh made sandwiches.
  • Nothing in the store will come pre-made and all ready to-go meals will be made daily in the market.
  • Their sandwiches will be the star of the show. On the menu is the Mangiamo Special: a sandwich made with ham, salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone topped with tomatoes, onions, roasted peppers with oil and vinegar drizzled on it.
  • They plan to bring the finest ingredients to Long Island. According to Camillo, “it’s stuff you don’t normally see on Long Island.”
  • The couple was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn where they get their inspiration. Their hope is that customers will walk in the market and indulge in the aroma of fresh baked bread, imported cheeses and cured meats. While they won’t have the classic deli sawdust on the floor, it's all a part of the experience.
