CinemadaMare: Italy’s International Traveling Film School

Every year, more than 300 young professionals, university, and film school students, representing over 65 countries, meet in Italy for CinemadaMare, a traveling film school campus and production center. The program travels throughout the county for three months and students work together during each stage of film production, including script development, location scouting, filming, and editing.

Filming is assisted by technical masters. The students’ films are screened in a weekly competition and a main one, at the end of the program. All films are screened outdoors in the main square of the city or town that is hosting the program for the week.

CinemadaMare has been running since 2003 and offers participants free accommodation as well as transport between cities. One of its main goals is to bring both participants and spectators closer to Italian culture. The traveling aspect of the program allows students to integrate and collaborate with local communities. The municipalities of 13 regions are currently involved in CinemadaMare, but the program is aiming to increase collaborations with additional local administrators.

The collaboration with Luce Cinecittà allows students to experience the Venice Film Festival at the end of the program. CinemadaMare also awards international scholarships to the best filmmakers on campus, which allows them the opportunity to study at universities and film schools around the world.
