Located in the foothills of the alps, Italy’s lake region offers dramatic scenery and a break from the intense summer heat.   • From East to West, Italy’s lake region comprises 8 lakes located in northern Italy.
  • They are all glacial lakes that formed after the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the last ice age.
  • The lakes are located in the Italian regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige.
  • Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and the third-largest lake in the Alps at 370 square kilometers or 143 square miles.
  • Lake Como is the third-largest lake in Italy and Europe’s fifth-deepest lake.
  • The international border between Italy and Switzerland straddles the water of Lake Maggiore.
