New Documentary Undresses Fashion’s Biggest Secrets Ahead of Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week kicks off on Tuesday, February 21st and Submarine Entertainment is releasing a new documentary titled, “MILANO - The Inside Story of Italian Fashion.” The documentary highlights Italian fashion while diving into the history of Italian style, showing the fashion explosion of the 1970s and 1980s. The film directed by John Maggio and written and produced by Alan Friedman will take viewers back to the events that took place the days before the assassination of Gianni Versace, including details on the secret planning of the merger between Gucci and Versace.“Every once in a while something comes along that’s a little unexpected, in that I often feel that a film about a topic, a broader topic, doesn’t always resonate with me,” Submarine's Josh Braun said in an interview with Variety.

Here are some things to know about the upcoming documentary:

  • Italian director and producer, Giuseppe Pedersoli is the executive producer of the documentary. His film, “The Truth About La Dolce Vita” premiered in Venice in 2020.
  • The documentary is co-written and produced by U.S. journalist Alan Friedman. He was the former Financial Times Milan correspondent.
  • The documentary is being produced by Alan Friedman’s production company, Beaver Lake Pictures. They are also working with Italian outfit Eagle Pictures and Enzo Ricci’s Milan-based 3 Mary’s Entertainment.
  • There is a star-studded cast as well as featuring fashion designer Giorgio Armani.
  • There will also be appearances by former Gucci creative director, Tom Ford and celebrity guests like Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson, and Frances McDormand.
  • Domenico De Sole and Santo Versace spill the most secrets regarding the potential Gucci-Versace merger
  • According to Alan Friedman, this is “the first-ever independent film about Italian fashion telling the secrets about the beginning of Armani and Versace, talking about their rivalries, telling the story about the death of Armani’s partner during the AIDS crisis, and having it told from the lips of the protagonists who lived it.”
  • The film will also uncover details about Maurizio Gucci from Tom Ford. They look to highlight how Gucci nearly sent the company into bankruptcy.
