Rome to Open First Public Hospital for Pets

It will be the first of its kind in Italy

Rome is set to establish its first public veterinary hospital which is slated to open to the public in 2024. The project, which will be the first in Italy, is part of a €6 million expansion and redevelopment of the municipal Muratella kennels in the Magliana neighborhood of Rome. Last week, the city announced that the hospital will offer free medical treatment to pets and will feature a 24-hour emergency room complete with an infirmary and washing room.

The institution will also be equipped with diagnostic and analysis laboratories, two operating theaters, a room for post-surgical hospitalization and intensive care, and an isolation area for pets diagnosed with transmissible diseases. “It will be a unique structure in Italy that will be equipped with the latest generation equipment and will also offer treatment services to low-income users who cannot afford private care,” stated Sabrina Alfonsi, Rome’s environmental councilor.

The hospital will also feature a new, expanded parking lot for pet owners. Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri hailed the announcement as “an important step in protecting the well-being of our four-legged friends.”
