Italian American comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco’s upcoming film “About my Father,” is set to be released in theaters on May 26. Maniscalco will star alongside Leslie Bibb, Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, and Robert De Niro.
In “About my Father,” Maniscalco brings his Italian immigrant hairdresser father Salvo (De Niro) on a weekend trip to meet his fiancée's (Bibb) wealthy family (Cattrall and Holmes). The plot centers around culture clashes and examines the relationship Maniscalco has with both his on-screen and real-life father.
"The truth really lies in the relationship between my father and myself. It's more relationship-driven as far as the immigrant father and his old-school, old-world values and me growing up in a different generation, so those two worlds collided," said Maniscalco to People.
The movie is directed by Laura Terruso, and the plot, according to Maniscalco, is loosely based on his experience meeting his wife Laura Gomez’s family, according to People. According to the comedian, De Niro perfectly embodied his real-life father Salvatore, who is 73. He describes how he and his father spent three days in Oklahoma with De Niro, who was filming a new movie there.
"It was a surreal experience, not only for myself but for my father," says Maniscalco to People. "I had posters on my bedroom wall of “Casino” and “Godfather.” These are experiences I shared with my dad over and over again. Next thing you know, he's sitting across from De Niro in a living room in Oklahoma and giving him pointers on how to wear his hat or how to smoke a cigar."
