Like everything else in New York City, there are tons of different gelato shops that it can be overwhelming to decide where to go. America Domani has rounded up a shortlist of incredible gelato locations you need to check out in the city.
Figo – Il Gelato Italiano
Formerly known as M’O Gelato, this place is a must while visiting Little Italy. Figo creates each batch of gelato with the freshest ingredients to make the best-tasting creamy delight. Walk into the small shop and you’ll find flavors like Stracciatella and Frutti di Bosco. They also serve Italian pastries like cannoli and homemade tiramisu.
Dolce Brooklyn
Located on Sackett Street in Brooklyn, this gelateria needs to be on your itinerary. All of the ingredients are locally sourced from the Hudson Valley, guaranteeing the quality is superb. While you’ll easily find classic favorite flavors, Dolce Brooklyn also offers sorbetto, a wide collection of macaron flavors, coffee, and other small desserts.
Il Laboratorio del Gelato
Owner Jon Snyder fell in love with ice cream making when he was nine years old while working for his grandparents in Cortlandt Manor, NY. After a trip to Italy at age 18, he found his passion of bringing gelato to New York City. Il Laboratorio del Gelato is a place where visitors can explore some of the most unique gelato flavors you will not find anywhere else.
L'Arte del Gelato
Francesco Realmuto was born and raised watching gelato masters in his hometown of Baucina, Sicily craft the delicious treat right before his eyes. Realmuto opened L’Arte del Gelato in Chelsea Market with the goal of bringing artisanal gelato to New York City. You will find there other locations at the Oculus as well as Lincoln Center.
Gelateria Gentile
First established in Bari, Italy in 1880, Gelateria Gentile’s enduring history found its way onto 8th Avenue in New York City. The shop specializes in “antique flavor,” one that can’t be found in any gelateria. Gelateria Gentile uses traditional recipes that utilize raw ingredients. You’ll also find other distinct treats like granita or affogato al caffè.
Caffè Panna
Modeled after gelato shops you’d find in the Eternal City, the gelato menu at Caffè Panna is ever-changing. The gelato is churned in-house, so expect the most vibrant flavors in every bite. All ingredients are sourced from the local Union Square Greenmarket. If they can’t find a specific ingredient for a new recipe they’ll source it directly from Italy!
