EU Health Committee Seeks Unity on COVID Travel
Italy is the first member of the EU to order COVID-19 antigen swabs for all travelers coming from China. Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia already require virus tests for visitors from China. Japanese authorities have limited flights to and from China.
Milan’s Malpensa Airport began testing passengers entering Italy from Beijing and Shanghai on Dec. 26 and found that many passengers were infected with COVID. According to local officials in Italy’s Lombardy region, about 38 percent of passengers on one flight into Malpensa tested positive for COVID-19, as did about 52 percent of those on a second flight.
The European Union Health Committee closed its recent meeting with a call for a united stance on COVID testing. Italy hopes that other members of the European Union will join them in increased testing.
