The 2022 Time Person of the Year joins a lone Italian American
Time Magazine named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy its Person of the Year, for what the publication called “proving that courage can be as contagious as fear.”
The magazine’s Editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal told the Associated Press that Zelenskyy — and what Time described as “the spirit of Ukraine” — were “the most clear-cut (winner of the award) in memory.”
Only one individual of Italian descent has won the prestigious title. In 2001, Rudolph Giuliani, Mayor of New York City at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks, was selected as a symbol of America's response to the attacks.
