Italian Car Runs on Plastic, Can reach 240mph

The Bertone GB110 will be on the car market in 2024.

Italian automobile manufacturer Bertone revealed renders for the new Bertone GB110. The GB110 is the first high-performance car that will run on waste plastic materials. The limited-edition vehicle – only 33 will be made – will mark Bertone's 110th anniversary.

The Bertone GB110 uses 'Select Fuel', a patented method of converting waste polycarbonate materials, such as plastic bottles, into liquid fuel. Bertone notes that the GB110 is the synthesis of low car weight and maximum acceleration.

“The GB110 is continuing Bertone's automotive legacy and is a contemporary interpretation of the Bertone DNA,” project and design manager Giovanni Sapio told The Daily Mail. “It's paying homage to (classic) Bertone designs from the 50s and 70s, merging the soft, rounded lines of the 50s with 70s style sharp edges.”

The original Bertone auto-maker was founded in 1912, but went bankrupt in 2014. In November 2022, brothers Mauro and Jean-Franck Ricci acquired the rights to Bertone. The GB110 is the first step in reviving an iconic car marker.

“We believe that de-pollution will require different solutions with combinations of technologies,” Bertone CEO Jean-Franck Ricci told the Daily Mail.

Bertone has yet to name a price for the GB110, which will hit the market in 2024.
